Miguel Street was the only book by Naipaul that I enjoyed. I could never get into his others. I'm not surprised you are finding 'Bend' offensive, he has some very negative views about the Caribbean and its people, unfortunately.
'Castle' is a bit difficult to get into - but it is a very good book.

I loved Miguel Street but I'm reading his A Bend in the River and am finding it disappointing and quite offensive. I have a book by Jamaica Kincaid and I have In the Castle of My Skin but haven't read them yet. Thx much for the recommendations. And because of them I'll be reading those ones I already have in my possession next. Can't wait to check out the others.

I love Kamau Brathwaite, especially his book The Arrivants. It is a poetry book. Also Jamaica Kincaid's books are quite interesting. I love Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, A Brighter Sun by Samuel Selvon, Miguel Street by V.S. Naipaul and In The Castle of My Skin by George Lamming. I also like Ben Okri, he is a Nigerian author.

I am dying for good Caribbean literature. I've lost almost all my Caribbean-authored books. All I have are a couple of V.S. Naipaul and one called 'Me Dyin' Trial'. I do have some others that I'd bought last year but haven't read them yet so I don't know if they're good or not. I bought them on a whim, as opposed to by recommendation. Who are your favourite Caribbean authors, or which are your favourite Caribbean books?
