Black Crafters Guild

African Diasporans creating, decorating, and artistically altering by hand

Afrofest is coming up and I'd hoped enough members would sign up so that we could share the booth space for $62.50 each. Unfortunately that's not happening (8 members are needed and would get 1/2 a table each) and I suspect that this is due to cost. One of the things BCG will be doing after obtaining charitable status under a local arts umbrella organisation is raising funds in order to pay for members' selling space at events. It would be great if we could raise enough money to pay for our own store-studio space as well but alas, that will probably remain a dream for while ...

At our own annual festivals members will have table/booth space for free. Non-members will be charged a fee to help cover event costs. Any surplus would go towards the funding of future events. I'm excited about our first independent event. I almost can't wait for it.

That's a great idea! Thanks. I'll look into that.

I doubt BCG will have its own show this year. Not enough ppl are interested and so the cost would be too high. I might rent the space anyway, if there are at least 2 of us, and try to raise funds to cover the costs. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to afford entertainment, so I'm looking for volunteers. So far, no so good. :)

The Toronto Natural Hair Show I might be at this weekend, as it's possible that I'll have someone to share the booth with, although not a BCG member. I don't have enough stock to make back the $ paid for my portion of the table, and I would be breaking my promise to myself to do no more events until I have enough stock, but it would be such a good opp to recruit for BCG, as well as raise awareness of my books.

The Toronto Small Press Book Fair yesterday was enjoyable. I would've loved to have seen all the tables. A poet from another table offered to relieve me. We did a trade and I am floored by her work. It's powerful.

I'd only brought 4 books. 2 were sold. Many people signed up for the raffle for a free customised journal. Drew said he did well at the event. He was 2 rows away from me.

The Guildwood Day event was good for the members who were there as vendors. From what I've heard, they fared quite nicely.

Tomorrow Charmaine Magumbe and I will be leaving town at 5:30 to pick up Sindiswa Gwazela then go back to the other side of Toronto for Guildwood Day. After setting up there, I'll be heading to downtown Toronto for the Small Press Book Fair, where I'll be sharing space with Vanessa Smilke. Drew Sanders will be there as well. Charmaine will drive Sindiswa back then she'll come over to where I am, when GD's marketplace closes. We hope to catch a bite after the book fair, then head back home.

I had resolved to not try to sell my books on eBay again, but I went ahead and relisted the auction anwyay. I'm eager to get onto Etsy. As soon as I clear my credit card, I will. I'm pretty sure my own BCG webstore won't be up before the end of summer. I need to build stock.

Would've sworn someone gave me a heads-up about the BCG badge/widget being illegible and now I can't find the comment. Whoever you were, thank you!

I've changed the titles of the pics so that they clearly reflect whose work they're of. Sorry about the mixup. Thx for the heads-up though!

OOPS! Oh shoot, those pics are not of all my work. I took pics at an event BCG was at on Apr 15. I don't do pottery (yet ... teeheehee ... I LOVED it in highschool but haven't done anything since). I didn't bring jewellery to the event. The only pics I've posted of my jewellery work is the set of rhodonite earrings.

Yes, I draw freehand but I usually use references (photos) to do so. A couple of the women I've drawn are reminiscent of one of my favourite artists. I also want to do a series reminiscent of Michaelangelo. I feel in love with his work at a young age. A friend might be posing for me with her child. I can't wait! Thank you for the compliments!
